In the science of Yoga and Samkhya, we do not start with the physical body to understand human life. We trace the blueprint of life back to its absolute beginning. To understand how the universe operates today, we must look at the exact mechanics of how it was originally constructed.
Ishvara: The Supreme Source of Knowledge
Before examining matter, we must establish the highest level of this architecture: Ishvara. In Yogic science, Ishvara is not a human-like deity, but a specific, ultimate state of pure consciousness. It remains untouched by time, karma, or suffering. The Yoga Sutras define Ishvara as the absolute source of knowledge and the first teacher – the reservoir of the laws of physics and mathematics.
The Beginnings: An Egg
Before the physical universe existed, everything was held in a state of pure, resting potential. The science of Samkhya calls this dormant state the Cosmic Egg, or Brahmanda. Inside this quiet space, two eternal forces existed side-by-side:
Purusha (The Father): Pure consciousness, the male energy. A silent, watching presence without physical form.
Prakriti (The Mother): The source of female energy and primal matter. The building block from which all reality is born.
The Three Balanced Forces: The Gunas
Inside the Mother, the raw material of nature is made of three fundamental forces called Gunas. At this stage, they were in a state of absolute, perfect balance.
Sattva: The Force of Balance
The energy of light and harmony. It represents the potential for knowledge and peace.
Rajas: The Force of Activity
The energy of movement and change. A powerful engine waiting to be sparked.
Tamas: The Force of Stability
The energy of heaviness and matter. It holds everything together in a deep, silent sleep.
The Spark of Life: The Meeting of Father and Mother
The universe only begins when the Father (Purusha) and the Mother (Prakriti) interact. The Father’s power is simply in his Presence. The moment this silent consciousness is reflected in the Mother, it acts like a spark. This connection instantly shatters the balance of the Gunas. The Cosmic Egg cracks open, and life pours out in a great cascade of energy.
Mahat: Cosmic Intelligence
The first result of this explosion is Mahat (Cosmic Intelligence) – the absolute logic and laws of physics. From this one event, the entire Multiverse, with its galaxies and stars, is born.
Om: The Breath of the Universe
This primordial sound of Om is the active force behind the expanding universe. You can hear this vibration everywhere – in every atom, every galaxy, and every sound. Whether in perfect silence or in the state of Samadhi, this resonance can be heard in everything. However, when the momentum of this vibration runs out, the universe will implode, pulling all matter back into the silent state of the Cosmic Egg.
