What is a Dosha? It is a Biological “Fault.”

If you search for “Ayurveda” online, you will likely find a superficial personality quiz. Wellness magazines treat the Doshas like horoscopes—telling you what massage oil to buy or what color shirt to wear based on whether you are “Vata, Pitta, or Kapha.”

This is a massive dilution of an ancient, highly clinical science.

Ayurveda is not a lifestyle trend. To understand it, you must look at the literal Sanskrit translation of the word. “Dosha” does not mean “personality type.” It translates directly to “Fault” or “Flaw.”

The Doshas are the inherent structural and energetic faults in your biological vehicle. If you do not actively keep these specific faults in balance through disciplined lifestyle and food choices, the machine breaks down, and you get sick.

The Blueprint: Set at Conception

Modern wellness often sells the illusion that you can simply change your Dosha. You cannot.

Unlike the Gunas (the energetic states of your mind, which fluctuate constantly), your Dosha is your permanent biological blueprint. It is determined at the exact moment of your conception, dictated by the combination of your parents' Doshas and their state of mind at that time. It is fixed for your entire life.

Everyone possesses all three Doshas—you need all the elements to survive—but they exist in different percentages. Most people have two prominent faults that dominate their system (for example, a Vata/Pitta constitution).

Understanding your Dosha means understanding exactly where your specific machine is most likely to fail.

The 3 Biological Faults

1. VATA: The Fault of the Nervous System (Air + Ether)

Vata is the energy of movement. It governs your nervous system, your breathing, and the firing of your brain synapses.

  • In Balance: The machine is highly adaptable, energetic, and mentally sharp. Your nervous system is responsive, and Prana (life force) flows smoothly through the body without restriction.

  • The Imbalance (The Fault Triggered): Because Vata is composed of Air and Space, it is cold, dry, and erratic. When this fault is triggered by stress, poor sleep, or a chaotic lifestyle, your nervous system fries. Your joints dry out and ache, your digestion becomes erratic (severe bloating), and your mind races with uncontrollable anxiety. You become a wired, exhausted machine.

2. PITTA: The Fault of the Metabolic Engine (Fire + Water)

Pitta is the energy of transformation. It is the chemical engine of your body, governing your digestion, your metabolism, and cellular regeneration.

  • In Balance: You have an iron-clad digestive system, a warm body temperature, a razor-sharp intellect, and absolute focus. You have the natural stamina of a leader.

  • The Imbalance (The Fault Triggered): Pitta is literal heat. When this fault is triggered by chronic overworking, anger, or highly processed, spicy foods, the internal engine runs too hot. This manifests clinically as systemic inflammation, acid reflux, skin rashes, high blood pressure, and deep psychological burnout. You become irritable, aggressive, and easily frustrated.

3. KAPHA: The Fault of the Structural Foundation (Earth + Water)

Kapha is the energy of mass and lubrication. It governs your bones, your muscles, your immune system, and the heavy structure of the vehicle.

  • In Balance: You possess immense physical strength, deep endurance, a robust immune system, and a calm, grounded, unshakable mind.

  • The Imbalance (The Fault Triggered): Kapha is heavy and dense. When this fault is triggered by sitting at a desk all day and living a sedentary lifestyle, the biological water turns into thick mud. This manifests as physical stagnation, lethargy, stubborn weight gain, water retention, and deep depression. The machine simply becomes too heavy to operate.

The Yogveda Solution: Clinical Balance

You cannot fix a biological fault by just drinking a different tea or taking an online quiz. You must physically and mechanically intervene.

At Yogveda Yoga in Bern, our classes are specifically designed to mechanically balance these Doshas. We use intense, heat-building flows to melt stagnant Kapha. We use precise forward folds to cool down an overheated Pitta. We use grounding, structural alignment, and deep breathwork to stabilize a panicked, erratic Vata.

But physical movement is only half the equation. You cannot out-train a bad diet. You must fuel the machine according to its specific faults.
