What is Reality? The Clinical Neuroscience of Biological Perception
Have you ever stopped to consider that the reality you are experiencing right this very second is a biological simulation?
If you define "real" as what you can see, hear, and touch, then reality is nothing more than a series of neuro-electrical signals being decoded by an organ locked inside a pitch-black vault.
Clinically and scientifically speaking, the colors you see and the sounds you hear do not exist "out there" in the objective universe. They are rendered entirely inside your head. You have never experienced the actual world. You are experiencing a highly customized, neuro-biochemical rendering constructed entirely inside your own skull.
Why am I writing this 5-part series deconstructing the illusion of reality?
To systematically dismantle the biological and psychological illusions that cause your suffering. My goal is to remove the unnecessary friction, the chronic anxiety, the illusion of greed, and the endless emotional drama from your daily existence. Once you understand how you actually shape your own reality, you can stop fighting the simulation and finally transform your brief visit on planet Earth into a pleasant, sovereign holiday.
At Yogveda Yoga, I rely strictly on the compiled, applied science of the DarÅanasĀ and modern functional neuroscience. In Part 1 of my series on the architecture of reality, I dismantle the illusion of human perception and answer the ultimate question: What is reality?
1. The Brain in the Dark Bony Box
To understand reality, you must understand the hardware processing it. Your brain is a three-pound mass of fat and tissue locked inside a dark, silent, bony vault (your skull). It has absolutely no direct contact with the outside world. There is no light inside your skull. There is no sound.
So, how do you see and hear?
You possess physical senses (IndriyasĀ in Samkhya DarÅana), which act as biological antennas. But these antennas do not capture reality; they translate it. Through a clinical process called sensory transduction, your eyes intercept electromagnetic radiation (light) and your ears intercept vibrating air molecules (sound). Your sensory organs instantly convert these physical inputs into neuro-electrical signals.
The "Controlled Hallucination"
Modern cognitive neuroscience has proven that your brain does not simply "watch" these signals like a TV screen. It operates on predictive processing. Your brain generates a constant, predictive hallucination of what it expectsĀ the world to be, and it uses the incoming sensory signals from your eyes and ears merely to correct its guesses. Clinically speaking, your everyday reality is just a "controlled hallucination" that happens to align with your environment. "Red" or "blue" do not exist objectively; they are just your brain's interpretation of electromagnetic wavelengths. You are living inside an interpretation.
2. The Hardware Dictates the Universe: Cats, Bats, and Snakes
If human perception is just a controlled hallucination, what is the "real" reality? To answer this, you must look at other biological machines. Every species possesses different hardware, meaning they experience a fundamentally different universe.
The Snake's Thermal World:Ā A pit viper does not see the world the way you do. Its biological hardware is equipped with pit organs that detect infrared radiation. To a snake, reality is a vibrant, glowing topographical map of heat signatures. A warm mouse hiding in pitch-black darkness is blindingly obvious to a snake, while you would see absolutely nothing.
The Bat's Acoustic Architecture:Ā A batās reality is constructed almost entirely out of sound. Through echolocation, a bat emits high-frequency sound waves and reads the returning echoes to build a precise, three-dimensional physical map of its environment in real-time. It "sees" the texture of a moth's wing in the dark using sound.
The Mouse's Slow-Motion Matrix:Ā A mouse processes visual information at a vastly higher "flicker fusion rate" than a human. Because their nervous system processes data faster, they perceive time and motion much slower than you do, allowing them to dodge a predator's strike in what looks to them like slow motion.
Evolutionary Utility: The 20% Energy Cost
But why exactly do you experience the world as a human and not as a snake? The answer lies in evolutionary utility and biological cost. Your brain accounts for only 2% of your body weight, yet it consumes a massive 20% of your metabolic energy.
Your brain was not designed to show you the absolute "truth" of the universe; it was engineered strictly to keep Homo sapiensĀ alive without starving to death from energy exhaustion. As diurnal, social primates, humans developed complex color vision to identify ripe fruit, and attuned auditory processing to decode language. Rendering infrared radiation or ultrasonic frequencies would require massive amounts of additional metabolic energyāa biological waste for a human. Therefore, your brain simply edits those realities out of your existence to save energy. You do not see the whole world; you only see the energy-efficient human survival rendering.
3. The Illusion of Matter: You Are Touching Empty Space
To fully shatter the illusion of your biological simulation, you must look at the physical world itself. Do you believe the phone in your hand or the floor beneath your feet is solid? Quantum physics and the classical physics of Samkhya DarÅana agree: solidity is a neuro-electrical illusion.
Everything in the visible universe is made of atoms. But what is an atom? Clinically speaking, an atom is 99.9999999% empty spaceĀ (Akasha). If you enlarged the nucleus of an atom to the size of a marble, its electrons would be a microscopic cloud orbiting miles away.
The Quantum Reality: Why Empty Space Feels Solid
If you and the wall are both entirely empty space, why doesn't your hand pass right through it? The concrete quantum explanation lies in Electromagnetic RepulsionĀ and the Pauli Exclusion Principle.
Quantum mechanics dictates that subatomic particles like electrons refuse to occupy the same quantum state. They form invisible, vibrating probability clouds. When the electron cloud of your hand meets the electron cloud of a wall, their negative charges violently repel each other. They never actually touch. There is always a microscopic gap of empty space between you and everything you have ever held.
Your brainās somatosensory cortex translates this invisible electromagnetic resistance into the physical sensation of "touch," "pressure," and "solidity." Solidity is not a physical object; it is a force field. You are feeling the resistance of energy, not the presence of matter.
The Existential Paradox: Collecting Empty Space
This brings me to a profound existential question: If it is all empty space, why do you experience existence this way?
Without this neuro-electrical illusion of solidity, there is no friction. Without friction, there is no human experience. The brain renders this empty space as a heavy, solid environment to give consciousness a playground in which to interact, struggle, and survive. The resistance of these force fields creates the very experience of existence.
Yet, this leads to the ultimate tragedy of human conditioning. Look at how most humans live: they spend their entire lives frantically collecting "solid" things. They hoard money, they buy houses, they cling obsessively to physical bodies, defending their territories of matter. You spend a lifetime desperately collecting empty space, held together by invisible electrical bonds, completely unaware of the illusion. And ultimately, you die. Those electromagnetic bonds break down, the body decomposes, and you return entirely to the infinite empty space from which you came. You spend your life collecting empty space, only to ultimately become empty space.
4. Objective Reality vs. Subjective Experience
To master your own mind, you must clearly divide these two concepts:
Objective Reality:Ā This is the absolute, unfiltered energetic truth of the universe. It is the raw electromagnetic waves, quantum force fields, and empty space existing in the absolute now. Because every biological organism is limited by its specific sensory hardware, Objective Reality is fundamentally unperceivable by any conscious mind.
Subjective Experience:Ā This is the 3D movie playing in your head, also known as Maya, the grand illusion in the DarÅanas. It is the neurological translation of a tiny fraction of the available data in the universe, heavily filtered by your biological hardware, your past memories, and your emotional state.
5. The DarÅana Science: The Architecture of Maya
This clinical neurobiology and quantum physics align flawlessly with the ancient, compiled science of the DarÅanas. Thousands of years ago, classical Indian science mapped this exact physiological limitation.
Western wellness culture incorrectly translates MayaĀ as "magic" or a mystical "illusion." That is false. MayaĀ is the clinical, neurological illusion created by the senses (Indriyas) and the processing mind (Manas). It is the realization that you are mistaking your brain's limited biological translation for the absolute truth (Sat).
6. Scientific Validation & Clinical References
To bridge the ancient science of the DarÅanasĀ with modern academia, I rely on verifiable neurobiology and quantum physics. The mechanisms of reality construction discussed in this article are validated by modern medical and physical literature:
Predictive Processing & Hallucinated Reality:Ā Seth, A. K. (2014).Ā "A predictive processing theory of sensorimotor contingencies." Published in Cognitive Neuroscience. Demonstrates the clinical consensus that the brain does not passively receive reality; it actively constructs perception via top-down predictions, effectively rendering reality as a controlled hallucination.
Quantum Solidity & Empty Space:Ā Lieb, E. H. (1976).Ā "The Stability of Matter." Published in Reviews of Modern Physics, 48(4), 553-569. This foundational physics paper mathematically proves that macroscopic matter is prevented from collapsing (and feels "solid" to the touch) purely due to the Pauli Exclusion Principle and electromagnetic repulsion.
Biological Perception and the Umwelt: Von Uexküll, J. (1934). "A Stroll Through the Worlds of Animals and Men: A Picture Book of Invisible Worlds." The foundational biological text establishing that different species inhabit entirely different constructed realities based on specific sensory hardware.
Time Perception in Animals:Ā Healy, K., McNally, L., Ruxton, G. D., Cooper, N., & Jackson, A. L. (2013).Ā "Metabolic rate and body size are linked with perception of temporal information." Published in Animal Behaviour, 86(4), 685-696. Proves that animals with higher metabolic rates and smaller bodies (like mice) have higher critical flicker fusion frequencies, meaning they physically perceive time moving slower than humans do.
7. The Yogveda Prescription: Make Your Visit a Pleasant Holiday
Why does this matter? Why do I teach this?
Because if you do not understand that your reality is a biological construction, you become a victim of it. When you mistakenly believe that your subjective perception of the worldāyour fears, your anxieties, your angerāis the absolute "objective truth," you generate immense, unnecessary friction. You fall into the delusion of greed, frantically hoarding empty space, and you drown in manufactured emotional drama.
To achieve self-mastery, you must stop taking your brain's customized, filtered movie so seriously. Once you accept that you are actively building your reality out of empty space and electrical signals, you can drop the anxiety. You can stop fighting the illusion and start consciously architecting the life you experience. I am giving you the tools to step back, observe the simulation with absolute sovereignty, and make your visit on this planet Earth a pleasant, peaceful holiday.
Your Applied Science Reflection: For the next 24 hours, whenever you feel absolute certainty about an argument, a stressful situation, or a desperate need to acquire something, pause and ask yourself: Am I reacting to objective reality, or am I generating emotional drama over my brain's specific, limited neuro-electrical translation of empty space?
